First confirm the court, case number and parties. Look for the document title and filing date, then determine whether the portal offers a public image, a party-access route or only an entry. Do not assume that creating an account grants access to restricted records.
California’s court guidance shows why this matters: a divorce record may be inspectable at the courthouse while the public cannot view its electronic documents remotely. Use your court’s own rules, not that example as a nationwide rule. If there is no permitted online image, note the entry details and ask the clerk for inspection or a copy. Confirm separately whether the intended use requires certification.
